Despite our reliance on technology, increasingly people are feeling the pinch of electronic overload – texting, emails and instant messages – we live with a constant stream of communication, we’re more “connected” then ever before, yet many of us feel bleary eyed and badgered by it all. The pleasure derived from receiving a handwritten note, trumps all forms of electronic communication. The pendulum is swinging as people tire of the constant stream of emails and text messages; sending hand-written notes is en vogue again.
Here’s a great letter writing tip for you – a handwritten thank you note says more about you than you might imagine. I learned at young age that taking the time to handwrite a note, thank you, condolence or otherwise, is the sign of good breeding and a way to help distinguish yourself from the masses. I have been penning letters since childhood thanks to my grandmother, who believed a lady should have the perfect shade of red lipstick, write a wicked thank you note and always carry a hanky in her pocketbook. My grandmother taught me that sending a timely and thoughtful handwritten thank you note is a heartfelt expression of gratitude that conveys warmth, attention to detail and I’ve since learned may even lead to a higher level of happiness.
A Harvard Business School study on gratitude conducted by associate professor Francesca Ginao, shows that emotions influence decisions and the perspective of others; Ginao believes that people who express gratitude are generally happier and more inclined to be benevolent towards others. “Receiving expressions of gratitude makes us feel a heightened sense of self-worth, and that in turn triggers other helpful behaviors toward both the person we are helping and other people, too,” Gino said.
