“When they go low, we go high.” ~ Michelle Obama

We saved the best for last! Can you believe it’s already the last Woman Crush Wednesday of February and Black Girl Magic Month? That’s why we saved our fave lady for last: Michelle Obama.
There’s not much I can tell you about our former First Lady, Michelle Obama that you don’t already know about her public life.  During her time in the White House, she was the “Mom-In-Chief” and started “Let’s Move!“, an anti-obesity initiative and a proactive measure to help Americans raise healthier kids.  And soon she’s going to be a guest judge on MasterChef Junior.  She was pro-veteran and shined a light on our nations troops in a way that has not been done in recent memory.  Oh, and let’s not forget those arms and sleeveless dresses and her ability to mix high and low fashion. (JCrew couldn’t keep anything she or the girls wore on the shelves!)
Two of my favorite memories of Michelle Obama and her time in the White House are when she did The Evolution of the Mom Dance with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show and her riveting speech at the 2016 Democratic National Convention:
“[T]he story of this country, the story that has brought me to this stage tonight, the story of generations of people who felt the lash of bondage, the shame of servitude, the sting of segregation, but who kept on striving and hoping and doing what needed to be done so that today I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves.
And I watch my daughters, two beautiful, intelligent, black young women playing with their dogs on the White House lawn.
And because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters and all our sons and daughters now take for granted that a woman can be president of the United States.
So, look, so don’t let anyone ever tell you that this country isn’t great, that somehow we need to make it great again. Because this right now is the greatest country on earth!”
These are two of my favorite moments because they show the humanity and complexity of a woman who had to soften her edges to successfully play the roles of First Lady and Mom-In-Chief.  Let’s not forget, Michelle Obama also went to Harvard Law School.  She’s smart, opinionated and, by all accounts of those who know her well, she is outraged by the current state of our union.  Rumors circulate about what she’ll be up to next now that she’s moved on from the White House. I, myself, can’t wait to see what the future holds for Mrs. Obama – she’s inspired women of all generations and hues.  I can tell you this, whatever it is she decides to do, you can best believe it will be with style, grace and honesty.
In her final speech, as First Lady, she said the role was “the greatest honor of my life,” and tearfully added, “I hope I have made you proud.”
She has.
