There’s so much going on in New York that sometimes it’s just fun to take a day off and explore! I always intend to check out new neighborhoods, but there’s usually so much new stuff going on downtown that I never make it past 14th Street. This weekend I spent some time hanging out in SoHo and the East Village.
As you all know, I’m a coffee drinker, but I’ve been hearing about this matcha craze and decided to give it a whirl. Well, ok – I saw their Insta feed and loved their branding …. I had matcha for the first time on my honeymoon in Argentina. Didn’t love it then, but this time around I fell in deep like! I had the matcha latte with coconut milk. Definitely worth a try!
If you watched Sex and The City, you know that New York City itself plays a leading role in the lives of those who live here. With real estate starting at about $50 per square foot, most New Yorkers sleep in postage stamp sized apartments and live, entertain and socialize in the City. There are always new restaurants, stores, people, venues and coffee shops to discover. The City’s streets are literally lined with amazing walls that provide the perfect back drops for movies, proposals, instagram images and just good plain old life.
My favorite Chinese restaurant in the City is Han Dynasty, or as we jokingly call it Handy Nasty. The original Han Dynasty is in Philly, but they do a bang up business on the LES catering to all of the NYU students and folks in the know. If you like Szechuan, this is the culinary spot for you to add to your list of things to do in NYC.
Well, just around the corner from Handy Nasty is Milk Bar; the perfect place for desert after a spicy meal. Milk Bar is the sister bakery to Momofuku, the famous restaurant chain owned by David Chang. They make cookies, cakes, pies and ice cream. The force behind Milk Bar is Christina Tosi. Chef Tosi is a two-time James Beard award winner; she focuses on putting a playful spin on familiar home-style desserts and savory snacks using quality ingredients and locally sourced dairy. And yes, she is the creator of the highly addictive cereal milk ice cream, compost cookies® and crack pie®, all of which have gained world-wide recognition since she opened milk bar’s doors in 2008.

Yesterday, I went wandering through a bookstore and decided it's time to start reading again. I used to read two to three books at a time and finish them fast but those days are long gone! Now that Essence Festival is over, I vow to get back into my old rhythm of reading.
