Look No. 1 – My Easter Bonnet

Easter triggers the start of the Spring Luncheon season for me.  My Links Chapter, the Greater New York Chapter of the Links, Inc.,  has it’s annual Spring Luncheon Easter weekend.  We all get to don our Easter bonnets, wear pretty dresses and host over 900 ladies who come out to Chelsea Piers to support us and the work we do in the community.  The Links, Incorporated is a national organization, similar to the Junior League, we’re committed to service and friendship.  I was lucky enough to learn about the Links when I was a teenager because my mom and her girlfriends were all Links.  Now, I’m proud to say that I’m a Link and most of my childhood girlfriends are too – the circle continues!

Look No. 2 – Purple Reign

Prince is a part of the soundtrack to my life.  I was shocked and in denial for the first few days when I learned about his untimely passing.  Then, devestation hit me …. and now, I’m just sad. Like Prince, my favorite color is purple, so you can best believe when I find a great purple dress, I buy it! I wore this pretty little number by Yves St. Laurent (one of my favorite designers) to the Union Settlement Gala.  Such a fun event, one of my Links Sister’s chaired it this year – John Turturro was the MC! Union Settlement is an organization that provides on-the-ground resources for East Harlem residents of all ages, and a passionate advocate for the needs of underserved communities

Look No. 3 – It’s All About Art

The Studio Museum’s Spring Luncheon is the ladies luncheon of all ladies luncheons for the well-heeled set in Manhattan who support African-American art and artists.  This was my first time going to this luncheon – it was sooo much fun!  Thelma Golden, the museum’s Director and Chief Curator, knows how to put on a good party!  Well, it’s held at the Mandarin Oriental over looking Central Park, so the setting is spectacular  … And while it’s a sizeable group it’s rather intimate – I ran into so many friends I haven’t seen in ages!

Look No. 4 – I Love My Link Sisters

I have an 80+ year old Link Sister, Dr. Marcella Maxwell who is my girl!  What’s so amazing about her is that she’s so tuned in to folks more than half her age.  She’s a spitfire of a little lady – she’s always been involved in politics and knows everyone in the city.  She’s been a Link forever and a day and knows the history of the organization, knew the original founders and is committed to insuring the organization exists long after she’s gone.  She’s a true treasure. Marcella came up with the idea to have a luncheon focused on maintaining the legacy of The Links, Incorporated and bringing two of the original chapters together to celebrate our shared histories.  Since Marcella was involved, you know I had to be there!
